Messy Church

What Is Messy Church?

Messy Church is an intergenerational form of Fresh Expression that creates space for people of all ages to explore faith together—through creativity, curiosity, and storytelling.
It’s playful.

It’s relational.

And it’s rooted in the belief that faith is best discovered as children and adults engage in community and curiosity side by side.

What Makes It Unique?

  • All ages together (not separated)
  • Creativity and hands-on exploration as a doorway to faith
  • No expectation of prior church experience
  • Gives those unsure about traditional church a community where they can belong before they believe
  • Shared meal creates space for shared life with all ages

What Does It Look Like?

It starts with a warm welcome, where families of any shape or size are greeted and oriented to the activities and options they can explore together. They then make their way to hands-on activities and stations that explore Bible stories through creativity and play, typically including crafts, science experiments, games, and sensory experiences. There may then be a short, engaging telling of the story as an act of simple worship, followed by a shared meal. Finally, the time concludes with a simple prayer or reflection.

Who It’s For

  • Churches wanting to reach young families
  • Communities where traditional children’s ministry isn’t working
  • Leaders who want something relational rather than merely programmatic
  • Congregations longing to reconnect generations

Why It Matters

Many families are looking for connection, meaning, and belonging—but not necessarily a traditional church service. Messy Church creates a space where faith can be explored naturally, together, and without pressure.

Want to Get Started?

Fresh Expressions partners with Messy Church USA to support and grow this movement across the country. If you are interested in starting a Messy Church, they have Messy-specific training to get you grounded in the values and the logistics of this mission and can connect you to a vast library of ready to use resources.

Please note that while the resources can be used by anyone, to use the Messy Church name and logo, churches need to register with Messy Church USA. You can find out more information about that membership here.

What happens when faith is formed through creativity, curiosity, and hands-on participation rather than rows and sermons? In this episode, Heather sits down with Crystal Goetz to explore the shared heartbeat between Messy Church and Fresh Expressions. Together they unpack how intergenerational, creative, and hands-on spaces cultivate openness, curiosity, and connection—often in places far beyond a traditional sanctuary. Crystal shares surprising stories of discipleship that unfolds across generations and reflects on how participatory, experiential communities naturally invite people into belonging from the very beginning. Crystal Goetz is a session writer, ambassador, and trainer for Messy Church USA, bringing her long-time experience as a Family Ministries Director into creating inclusive content and launching Messy Churches in unconventional community spaces. When she’s not immersed in all things Messy Church, she enjoys making junk journals and reclaimed paper ephemera, watching English football with a cup of tea, and traveling or playing games with her family. Crystal often says, “Messy Church is my church,” finding deep meaning in its interactive, inquisitive nature and dedicating herself to helping Messy Churches grow and thrive for years to come. This season, we’re diving into the streams of Fresh Expressions — from senior adults and recovery ministry, to arts, outdoors, recreation, and more. Each month, you’ll hear directly from practitioners who are navigating these fresh ways of being church in the world. Their stories will spark your imagination and encourage you to see where God is already at work in your community and how you might join in! So whether you’re a pastor, lay leader, or simply curious about how church can thrive beyond the walls, join us for Season seven of the Fresh Expressions Podcast. Related Resources:
