For many rural churches, the building is one of the most significant resources they have and sometimes one of their greatest challenges. But what might change if we began to see our facilities not simply as something to maintain, but as something entrusted to us for the sake of our communities? In this episode of the Rural Renewal Podcast, Kathleen and Chris sit down with Josh Lilly, Senior Pastor of Crossroads Community Church in Michigan, for a conversation about faithful stewardship, creative ministry, and looking at the resources we already have with fresh eyes. Josh shares how Crossroads is finding creative ways to use its facilities to serve its community, build relationships, and create opportunities for ministry. Along the way, he talks candidly about the challenges and surprises that come with opening a church building to new possibilities, how leaders can discern which partnerships fit the church’s mission, and why meaningful community impact doesn’t require a large or impressive facility . Dr. Josh Lilly serves as Senior Pastor of Crossroads Community Church in Michigan, where he is committed to expository preaching, biblical discipleship, and developing leaders for the local church. He holds a Doctor of Ministry from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, where his doctoral work focused on equipping laymen for biblical eldership. Josh is passionate about seeing churches shaped by the gospel, strengthened through healthy leadership, and equipped to make disciples who make disciples. Chris and Kathleen Blackey , are hosts of the Rural Renewal Podcast. Since 2010, together they have served as co-pastors at the First Baptist Church of South Londonderry, Vermont. The Blackeys live in South Londonderry, Vermont with their children – Sarah, Daniel, and Priscilla, as well as their cat, dog, and chickens. In this episode, Heather Jallad sits down with Jeff Wadley as he shares how “creation immersion” has opened unexpected opportunities for community, discipleship, and spiritual formation along the hiking trail. What happens when the vision of Fresh Expressions is translated not only into another language, but into another cultural context? In this episode, we talk with Eliseo Mejia, who translated and contextualized Expresiones Divinas, the Spanish edition of Travis Collins’ book on Fresh Expressions. Eliseo shares how the ideas behind Fresh Expressions connect with the rhythms, relationships, and everyday spaces of Hispanic communities across the U.S. We also explore why making resources available in Spanish matters, because it is opening the door for more pastors and leaders to imagine new forms of church in their own contexts. Our hope is simple: to help place this resource into the hands of Spanish-speaking leaders and churches who are ready to cultivate new communities of faith where people already are. Rev. Dr. Eliseo A. Mejia is a highly regarded global coach, writer, missiologist, pastor, and church planting leader. He imparts his knowledge and wisdom as a teacher at Asbury Seminary in Willmore, Kentucky, and United Theological in Dayton, Ohio. In addition to his teaching roles, Dr. Mejia guides architects in diverse cultural and country settings, helping them navigate all stages of innovative projects from inception to completion. This is a BONUS episode of the Fresh Expression podcast. A healthy church isn’t just a tight-knit group of friends. It’s a place where all kinds of relationships can flourish. In this conversation, David Blackwell shares how insights from Dunbar’s Number invite rural church leaders to rethink size and connection, and how prioritizing weak, bridging relationships can help rural churches break down cliques, welcome outsiders, and embody the Gospel in place. Listeners will hear both a challenge and a roadmap for building more robust relational ecosystems that reflect the breadth of God’s community. David Blackwell has served as the senior pastor of Florence-Carlton Community Church in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana for 19 years, and is passionate about helping develop church leaders and pastors for outwardly-focused, community-oriented ministry in small town and rural settings. How much difference can a Dinner Church make? In this episode, you’ll hear from Beckie Adams, a Dinner Church leader in rural New Mexico. Over two years, their “Jesus Table” congregation has grown to the same size as their Sunday morning congregation. But their numerical success has happened in spite of the drugs, alcohol, and poverty that are an inescapable reality in their region. Listen to this podcast to explore the difference one small church in a small town can make. Beckie Adams felt called to reach out to marginalized populations with a meal and conversation about life for about 15 years. She retired from the secular world in 2021. Although having served as a lay minister in her denomination, she was never ordained nor had any licensure or formal education. After going through the Dinner Church School of Leadership in 2021-2022, she had the framework and details to realize this mission. In January 2023, Neighborhood Dinner @ the Landing was birthed, which Beckie serves as the pastor for this Dinner Church. Do movies actually reflect real-life ministry? Or do they miss the quiet tensions, complexities, and grace that leaders carry every day? Whether you’ve seen the movie or not, this conversation invites you to think about how stories shape our understanding of church, calling, and renewal where life and faith intersect. What if faithfulness in rural ministry isn’t about moving faster—but about listening longer? In this episode of the Rural Renewal Podcast, we hear from PJ and Melanie, two co-pastors planting a church in southwestern Virginia who have learned to let prayer, patience, and presence set the pace. They share honestly about discerning God’s leading, choosing slowness in a culture that rewards speed, and remaining open to change—even when it’s uncomfortable or costly. Their story is a reminder that deep roots are formed through intentional prayer, trust in God’s timing, and the courage to adapt for the sake of the people God has placed before us. Patrick “PJ” Johnson serves as a network administrator for Scott County Public Schools, Lead Pastor of Uplift Church in Weber City, Virginia, and an adjunct faculty member at the Appalachian School of Theology. He and his wife, Amanda, planted Uplift Church in their home in 2012. Patrick and Amanda have been married for 24 years and have four daughters. Melanie McMurray is married to her husband, Matt, and is raising three children, Elijah, Elan, and Salem.
